How did the universe begin?

There are actually several theories regarding the beginning of the universe but the most prevalent has been the Big Bang theory, in which 13.7 billion years ago, an "explosion" occurred that released the building blocks of matter, which eventually conglomerated into atomic particles and eventually space objects.
